OK, I confess. This weekend my wife was out of town, so I didn’t bother with any serious cooking. I bought some frozen Angus beef patties and some frozen French fries, and took the easy way out. This lack of effort, as it turns out, was a good thing, as I finally discovered some frozen taters that cook up even better at home than a fast food joint can deliver! I am in hog heaven!
This product, which just recently appeared at my local Wal*Mart, is Cavendish, Always Crisp, Seasoned Straight Cut fried potatoes. I must say that, truly, the only reason that I selected this brand was the price, which was a good deal less than the name brand competition and competitive with the store brand. Plus, the package was pretty.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, and since I’ve never had a decent fry produced by baking, I decided to pan fry some in vegetable oil. I wasn’t very hungry, so I only cooked a few, in enough oil to come up to about half way on a given fry, and also wasn’t tempted into throwing them all into the skillet at once, meaning that I layered them out so all slices were down in the oil equally. Thus, through what I suspect was a combination of careful cooking and a good product, the fries came out as close to perfect as one could hope, with a delightfully crisp outside and a slightly firm and satisfying inside. Also, the seasoning on them was not bad at all. A bit too much salt, but what pre-packaged product doesn’t go there?
I’m guessing that I’ll be doing more research on this product next weekend, and I’ll share it with y’all if I change my mind.

Ok, I’m skeptical, but I’ll give ‘em a whirl if I can find ‘em.
Hi Heff,
Let me know how it works out.
